Red squirrels (Sciurus Vulgaris) are a native species to the UK, and are found throughout the Scottish highlands. They are smaller than grey squirrels, with reddish-brown fur and distinctive ear tufts. Red squirrels are arboreal animals, spending most of their time in trees, and are active during the day.

The red squirrel population in the Scottish highlands has declined significantly over the past century due to habitat loss, disease, and competition with non-native grey squirrels. However, efforts are being made to conserve the remaining populations.

Conservation efforts include the establishment of protected areas, such as national parks and nature reserves, where red squirrels can thrive. Additionally, there are ongoing efforts to control the spread of grey squirrels, which can outcompete red squirrels for resources and transmit a disease called Squirrelpox that is deadly to red squirrels.

If you are interested in observing red squirrels in the Scottish highlands, there are several areas where they can be seen, such as the Cairngorms National Park, the Glen Affric National Nature Reserve, and the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park.
